Αρκεί να ειπωθεί χαρακτηριστικά πως υποστηρικτές του Τούρκου προέδρου Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν επιτέθηκαν σε ομάδα στρατιωτών που είχαν παραδοθεί σε γέφυρα της Κωνσταντινούπολης, αφού είχαν συμμετάσχει στην απόπειρα πραξικοπήματος, πριν η αστυνομία επέμβει για να τους διασώσει, δήλωσε στο Reuters αυτόπτης μάρτυρας.
Ο Ερντογάν κάλεσε επανειλημμένα τους υποστηρικτές του να βγουν στους δρόμους για να βοηθήσουν να κατασταλεί η απόπειρα πραξικοπήματος, για την οποία υποστήριξε πως πραγματοποιηήθηκε από μια φράξια των ενόπλων δυνάμεων πιστή στον αντίπαλό του, τον ιερωμένο Φετουλάχ Γκιουλέν που έχει την έδρα του στις ΗΠΑ.
