âIâm 6â2 â dating is almost impossible,â says woman bullied for height
A 6â2 woman has shared how dating is almost âimpossibleâ for her at her height, but insists that contrary to her critics, you can be both tall and feminine.
Marie Temara, 28, has been taller than most women her whole life and has faced a host of struggles thanks to her height â from childhood bullying to proving that she can still be feminine.
One thing that has proved a particular struggle has been dating, with only 2% of the population in her native Florida being taller than 6â3.
âI will admit it is extremely difficult to find a guy taller than me,â Marie, from Palm Beach, told NeedToKnow.co.uk
âDating at my height is almost impossible because it is so limited.
âOne guy I went on a date with said he was 6â5 on his online dating profile, but when I met up with him he was at most 5â11.
âIâve been told âno one likes tall girlsâ, I look like a âman in heelsâ, Iâm âtoo heavy to be a girlâ and that âthe Giants are looking for a linebackerâ.
âI would never wear heels and would slouch in public.Â
Iâd do anything to make myself appear shorter to fit in.
âHowever, recently I have started dating shorter guys, and now that Iâm open to dating at any height, it is much easier to date.
âBut sometimes itâs still difficult to find a guy that is OK with me being taller than him.
âI hope to change the dating stigma that âmen have to be the taller ones in the relationshipâ because height shouldnât matter.
âI donât mind being a foot taller or two taller than any man!â
When she was born, Marie weighed 12 lbs and throughout her childhood was always at least a head taller than all of the other boys and girls in her school classes.
Marie said: âBeing the tallest one in school was challenging for me because I was bullied frequently for being so much taller and different from everyone else.
âKids would pick on me and call me a man or a house because I was taller and heavier than most of the male teachers.
âI had no friends and other children would taunt me so badly, that I would eat lunch alone in the bathroom stall.
âLooking back on that, I donât know how kids could be so cruel to someone just because they look different.â
But despite the incessant bullying, Marie has blossomed into a beacon of self-confidence.
And she is far from alone, incredibly being the shortest member of her family â with her dad standing at 6â3, her mother 6â5, her brother 6â9, and her youngest brother 6â10.
Now 28, Marie still has to fight through the challenges of being a taller woman and still struggles to find clothes and shoes that fit her.
She added: âPants are never long enough and I can never find my shoe size, which is a menâs size 12.
âI have to custom order all of my clothes and shoes, which can get very expensive and time-consuming.
âPlus, most are made for average size people, so day-to-day things can be a bit more challenging for me such as cars, planes, rollercoasters, doorways, shower heads, toilets, beds, and other household appliances are almost always too small for me.â
There are also advantages that come with Marie being taller than most, as she can observe sports well, do well when taking part in basketball, and can reach things on higher shelves in supermarkets, as well as receive compliments on her long legs.
She said: âI also get generally positive comments on my height now and many short kings praise me for my long legs, calling me âMommy long legsâ, saying âwe are all the same height laying downâ and âIâd climb that treeâ.â
Marie, who weighs 210 lbs, added: âNowadays, I embrace my curves as a plus-size model, am proud to be tall and try to inspire others that being tall and different is beautiful.
âI am now ultra-feminine because I donât ever want to be called a man again and am trying to change the stigma that being tall isnât a masculine trait.
âYou can be a tall girl and still be feminine.
âI just hope to inspire others and show them that being tall, plus-size, and different is beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of.
âAlso, to try and change the dating stigma that short kings and tall queens don’t belong together!â
